In the digital age where screens stream an endless supply of information, Jobs insightfully Jesus’d us with “simplicity 2.0”. It’s not about ditching all the content, no sir, it’s about judiciously curating it.
However, one can’t help but roll their eyes at the tech industry’s fervor to adopt this mantra, closely enough in fact, that it skirts hypocrisy. How so? Meet Sony’s latest wrist wear, the FES Watch U. This sixth-generation digital art display promises to reinvent the humble wristwatch through the magic of E-paper.
Sony engineers probably never planned to advise time-obsessed horologists on the art of making timepieces but here we are. With the FES Watch U, they are bold enough to think they can add value to ‘horology’ – a learning from thousands of years of our civilization. And, oh boy, are they off to a flying start. An E-ink band that displays no less than 24 different designs, at your fingertips. Quite genius, right?
Not to forget the annoyingly informing “Sony Seed Acceleration Program” which supposedly nurtures seeds of innovation into glorious sequoia of inspiration. You can’t make this stuff up.
Take it from Sony, the writing is on the wall (or in this case, on the wrist); time is no longer measured in hours and minutes, but rather by an algorithm for customizable patterns and designs that delight.
The FES Watch U comes with a refreshing promise of bringing back “simplicity” to our lives. Whether or not it actually delivers, or merely ends up turning a 5000-year-old device into the new Tamagotchi pet for bored tech enthusiasts, only time will tell – pun not intended.
But hey, in the age of constantly vibrating smartwatches and invasive push-notifications, what’s more simple than a device that promises to be something it always was – a watch. Hats off to the simplicity 2.0 gang, your elegance is far from unwelcome. Thank you for, you know, re-inventing the importance of a watch giving its user the time. It’s a crazy, revolutionary, unheard of concept.
